KERAJAAN NINGXIA
Lebih kurang 3000 tahun
dahulu, ketika Raja Negara Ningxia pergi berburu
di Bukit He Lan,
Baginda ternampak seorang wanita sedang memukul seorang lelaki tua
berjanggut. Baginda berasa hairan dan bertanya kepada wanita itu apa
yang terjadi?
Wanita itu menjawab: "Saya sedang memukul cucu saya!".
Baginda amat terkejut dan bertanya kepada wanita itu berapa umurnya dan
kenapa dia kelihatan begitu muda. Wanita itu menjawab:
"Saya
berumur 260 tahun. Ketika musim bunga, saya makan daun Goji dan minum
teh Goji. Ketika musim panas, saya makan buah Goji dan pada musim luruh
saya mengambil akar Goji dan membuat pes. Inilah rahsia saya".
Baginda amat kagum dan
menasihati seluruh rakyat Baginda agar mengamalkan Goji. Semenjak hari
itu, mengamalkan Goji untuk hidup panjang usia telah menjadi sebagai
satu tradisi penduduk di kawasan itu.

NINGXIA KINGDOM
About 3000 years ago, it was told that
the King of Ningxia at that time happened to go hunting at He Lan
mountain and saw a woman hitting an old man with beard. The king was
puzzled and asked the woman what happend?
The woman answered: "I was hitting my grandson! The King was shocked and asked the woman how
old she was and why she looked so young:
"I
am 260 years old. During spring, I eat Goji leaves and drink Goji tea.
During summer, I eat Goji Fruit and during Autumn I take root and make
it into paste and this is the secret".
The King was absolutely amazed, and
adviced his citizen to consume Goji. Since then, taking Goji for living
a long life became the tradition of the people in that region.

What
are goji berries?
Other Names: Lycium barbarum, wolfberry, gou qi zi, Fructus lycii
Goji berries grow on an evergreen shrub found in temperate and
subtropical regions in China, Mongolia and in the Himalayas in Tibet.
They are in the nightshade (Solonaceae) family.
Goji berries are usually found dried. They are shriveled red berries
that look like red raisins.
Why do people use goji berries?
Goji berries have been used for 6,000 years by herbalists in China,
Tibet and India to:
- protect the liver
- help eyesight
- improve sexual function and fertility
- strengthen the legs
- boost immune function
- improve circulation
- promote longevity
Goji berries are rich in antioxidants, particularly carotenoids such as
beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. One of zeaxanthin's key roles is to
protect the retina of the eye by absorbing blue light and acting as an
antioxidant. In fact, increased intake of foods containing zeathanthin
may decrease the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration
(AMD), the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in people over
the age of 65.
In recent years, goji juice has become popular as a health beverage.
Companies marketing goji juice often mention the unsupported claim that
a man named Li Qing Yuen consumed goji berries daily and lived to be
252 years old. Marketers also list extensive health benefits of goji
juice, even though there are few published clinical trials in humans.
What research has been done on goji berries?
Goji has only been tested on humans in two published studies. A
Chinese
study published in the Chinese Journal of Oncology in 1994 found that
79 people with cancer responded better to treatment when goji was added
to their regimen.
There have been several test tube studies that show that goji berry
contains antioxidants and that goji extracts may prevent the growth of
cancer cells, reduce blood glucose, and lower cholesterol levels.
However, that doesn't necessary mean that goji will have the same
benefits when taken as a juice or tea.
Although goji berries like the ones used in traditional Chinese
medicine aren't very expensive, goji juice is very pricey. Considering
that a 32-ounce bottle of goji juice (about an 18-day supply) can run
as high as $50 USD, the evidence isn't compelling enough at this time
to justify the cost of goji juice.
Also, we don't know the side effects of regular goji consumption, or
whether it will interfere with treatments or medications.
What do goji berries taste like?
Goji berries have a mild tangy taste that is slightly sweet and sour.
They have a similar shape and chewy texture as raisins.

The goji berry is a Chinese berry that has been getting attention as an
anti aging wonder. Goji berries (also called wolfberries) are used in a
wide variety of traditional
Chinese
medicine preparations. Goji berries have high levels of
antioxidants,
making them a popular superfruit, and opening the potential of health
and anti aging benefits. They also (like most fruit) contain a wide
variety of healthy vitamins and minerals. You’ll see goji berries added
to everything from
chocolate
bars to energy drinks.
Personally, I’m not sure what goji berries taste like. I’ve had them
in chocolate bars and energy bars and they taste something like a dried
cranberry – but mostly because they are small, red and chewy. According
to the package labels, there are all sorts of health benefits to goji
berries .
Goji Berry Health Claims
In traditional Chinese medicine, goji berries are often made into a tea
that is said to work on the liver and other areas of the bodies. In
food products, goji berries are often dried and mixed in with the other
ingredients. Marketers of goji berries have made the following health
claims:
But the real truth is that there is very little evidence of any of
these health benefits to drinking goji berry juice or eating foods with
goji berries in them. In fact, I was looking for sources for this
article and I really couldn’t find any – just the labels on the foods
and goji berry websites.
Should I Eat Things With Goji Berries?
The way I see it, goji berries are just another fruit. Fruit is good
for you. You should probably eat more fruit. If goji berries are
interesting to you and you like how they taste, then eat more of them.
But if you want to stick to apples and bananas, that’s OK too. Goji
berries alone aren't going to make you younger or prevent aging. Try
instead to get as wide a variety of fruits in your diet and for 3-4
servings of fruit every day.
